Quartets

What is a Quartet?

Four photographs of the marks cities leave on themselves, printed as four plates and floated in one tray frame. It is one work, and the plates are never sold apart.

Who is Harrop?

An artist who has spent twenty years photographing surfaces: a scraped door, a wall painted over, tape on a shutter, rust where a sign used to be.

Is each work really one of one?

Yes. Each Quartet is made once and its code is retired. The same four photographs, in any arrangement, are not offered again. Every work is recorded on the List.

Can I choose my own photographs?

Yes. You can compose your own Quartet from the archive, and Harrop approves it before it is made. You can also choose from the nine Quartets composed by Harrop.

What sizes are available?

The Quartet is 76 × 102 cm and the Grand Quartet is 105 × 140 cm. Other sizes are available by arrangement for designers and venues.

How much does a Quartet cost?

A one of one is £1,950 for the Quartet and £3,250 for the Grand Quartet. Works by Harrop are priced on request. Crating and delivery are quoted separately. We are not VAT registered, so we do not add VAT.

How is it made?

Each photograph is UV-printed directly onto an aluminium composite plate. The four plates are floated on cotton museum board in an unglazed tray frame, by hand in London.

How long does it take?

Six to eight weeks once your deposit is paid. We confirm an expected delivery date with your order.

Do you deliver worldwide?

Yes. Works are crated and delivered anywhere, and we quote for your address before you pay anything. Import duties outside the UK are payable by you.

How do I pay?

You approve a digital proof, then pay a 50% deposit by secure link. The balance and delivery are due before dispatch.

How do I know it is authentic?

Every work has a tamper-proof hologram and a certificate signed by Harrop, with a matching code, and is entered on the List.

Do you work with interior designers and hotels?

Yes. Designers, architects and venues compose sets with Harrop for private houses, hotels, members' clubs and restaurants. Each work is still made once, and each proposal has a private page without prices to show your client.

Prints

Can I buy a single photograph?

Yes. Any photograph in the archive can be printed on its own, from £95 with free UK delivery. Harrop selects a few on the Prints page; for any other, choose it in the composer and press Buy print.

What paper is it printed on?

Hahnemühle Photo Rag: a 100% cotton rag fine art paper, 308 gsm, matte, with a soft, lightly felted surface and a natural white tone.

How is it printed?

As a giclée, with pigment-based archival inks, the method museums and galleries use. The inks will not fade when the print is displayed indoors; as with any work on paper, hang it out of direct sunlight.

What sizes are there?

Small: a 24 × 32 cm photograph on a 30.5 × 40.6 cm sheet (12 × 16 in), £95. Large: a 36 × 48 cm photograph on a 45.7 × 61 cm sheet (18 × 24 in), £165. Each has a white border with the H. printed under the corner.

Is it framed?

It can be. Each print comes unframed, ready for a standard 12 × 16 in or 18 × 24 in frame, or framed in a black box frame behind glass, ready to hang: £195 Small (32.4 × 42.4 cm outside), £325 Large (47.4 × 62.4 cm outside). In the frame it keeps its white border and the H. under the corner.

Is it signed or numbered?

No. A print is not a one of one and is not numbered. The H. under the corner marks it as Harrop's.

How long does it take to arrive?

Each print is made to order within 72 hours, then posted. It is usually with you within a week. Delivery is UK only for now, and free.

How is it packed?

Unframed, rolled in a protective tube. Framed, in a double-walled box. Both in plain packaging.

Can I buy more than one?

Yes. Add each print to your wall, then buy them together in one checkout. Unframed prints arrive in one parcel; a framed print comes in its own box.

Can I give a print as a gift?

Yes, in two ways. Choose the print yourself and tick This is a gift at checkout: it goes to their address, with no prices in the parcel. Or give a gift card, worth £95, £165, £195 or £325, and they choose the photograph, the size and the frame. A card lasts 12 months and is emailed to you to pass on, or to them on a day you choose.

Can I return a print?

Yes. Tell us within 14 days of delivery and send it back in good condition, a framed print in its original box; we refund the price when it arrives. If a print arrives damaged, email us photographs of it and of its packaging within 14 days, and keep the packaging until we reply; we will reprint it or refund you.

Can a photograph in a Quartet also be a print?

Yes. A Quartet, the four photographs together in one frame, is made once and never again. A single photograph from it may also be sold on its own as a print.
